REF: 3738/100
The present Patek Philippe Golden Ellipse “Jumbo” reference 3738/100J, executed in yellow gold and dating to 2014, is a refined and highly attractive modern example of one of Patek Philippe’s most enduring and architecturally distinctive designs. Introduced in 1968, the Golden Ellipse remains a cornerstone of the manufacture’s aesthetic language, defined by its harmonious proportions inspired by the golden ratio. This example is preserved in very good overall condition. The case and bezel have been professionally repolished in the past and now present in excellent condition, showing only light wear consistent with careful use. The watch is powered by the automatic Patek Philippe calibre 240, featuring a micro-rotor, and is running exceptionally well at the time of cataloguing, with measured performance of approximately 296 degrees amplitude and -2 seconds per day. While no service history accompanies the watch, its current mechanical performance is excellent. The watch is fitted with a deep blue dial and features the desirable Mk IV dial configuration, identifiable by its domed hour markers and hands, as well as the discreet “SWISS” signature at 6 o’clock. The overall dial presentation is clean, elegant, and perfectly in keeping with the timeless character of the Golden Ellipse. Measuring 31 x 35 mm, this so-called “Jumbo” Ellipse offers enhanced presence on the wrist while retaining the ultra-thin elegance for which the model is celebrated. The reference 3738 holds particular historical importance, as it was the first generation of self-winding Ellipse models to be fitted with the legendary calibre 240 micro-rotor, which made its debut in this reference in 1977, nine years after the launch of the collection. A true feat of watchmaking, this manufacture calibre allows for exceptional thinness while delivering a power reserve of approximately 45 hours. The watch is fitted with a new blue leather strap, accommodating wrists up to approximately 7.5 inches, and paired with its original Patek Philippe yellow-gold Ellipse pin buckle, which is preserved in perfect condition. The watch is accompanied by an Extract from the Archives, confirming production in 2014 and original sale in April 2014. No other box or papers are present. Elegant, mechanically sophisticated, and historically significant within the Ellipse lineage, this Golden Ellipse 3738/100J represents a compelling opportunity to acquire a modern example of one of Patek Philippe’s most iconic and intellectually designed dress watches, combining micro-rotor innovation, timeless design, and excellent overall condition.
