The present Rolex Explorer reference 1016, bearing the serial number 3480XXX and dating to 1972, is a highly attractive and honest example of this iconic 36 mm tool watch. The stainless-steel case has been polished in the past and shows light wear consistent with careful use, while retaining pleasing proportions and a flat, well-defined bezel. The serial and reference numbers between the lugs remain clearly legible, and the caseback is correctly stamped “1.72,” in line with the production period. The watch is fitted with a particularly appealing tritium Mk1 “frog foot” dial, preserved in very fine condition. The luminous material on the hour markers and the signature 3/6/9 numerals has aged to a warm, slightly creamy patina, giving the watch a beautifully balanced and period-correct appearance. The original hour and minute hands remain intact and match the dial well. The seconds hand is a later service replacement with luminova. Inside, the watch is powered by the Rolex calibre 1570, which has been checked by our watchmaker and is functioning correctly at the time of cataloguing. The watch is paired with its original folded Oyster bracelet reference 7836 with 358 endlinks. The bracelet shows noticeable stretch, entirely normal and expected for a bracelet of this age. The clasp is not date-stamped, a detail often encountered on early 1970s Rolex bracelets. With its attractive Mk1 “frog foot” dial, correct early 1970s configuration, strong case details, and honest overall condition, this Explorer 1016 represents a compelling opportunity to acquire a classic Rolex sports watch that perfectly embodies the understated and utilitarian spirit of the model.
