A true grail for vintage Rolex collectors, this early Submariner Date reference 1680 features the coveted MK1 "Meters First" red dial, produced only for a short period in the late 1960s. With a 2.1XXXXX serial number, this example dates to early 1969 and retains its original character throughout.
The case is very well preserved, showing signs of past polishing but remaining full and honest, with light wear consistent with age. The MK1 tritium dial is exceptionally rare and remains in excellent condition overall, with a warm vintage patina and only minor wear. Notably, the lume at the 9 o’clock marker is partially missing—a common trait in untouched examples. The matching hands are original to the watch and show consistent aging.
The black bezel insert is in very good condition and retains strong color with only minimal surface wear. The watch is fitted with its original folded-link Oyster bracelet (ref. 9315) with 380 end links, showing light stretch from use. The clasp was replaced in 2004. Between the lugs, both serial and reference numbers remain crisp and clearly visible. The caseback is correctly stamped 1680 I.69, consistent with the serial range and production year.
There is no known service history, but the movement is running smoothly and keeping excellent time.
A highly desirable and honest early Red Submariner, with a rare MK1 dial that will appeal to discerning collectors seeking originality and character.
